AbstractAccording to the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC), the primary purpose of an ACCJC-accredited institution is to foster learning in its students. This paper presents ACCJC's four accreditation standards: (1) Institutional Mission and Effectiveness--the institution provides means for students to learn, assesses learning effectiveness, and strives to improve that learning through ongoing, systematic, and integrated planning; (2) Student Learning Programs and Services--instructional programs, student support services, and library and learning support services facilitate the achievement of the institution's stated student learning outcomes; (3) Resources--human, physical, technology, and financial resources enable these programs and services to function and improve; and (4) Leadership and Governance--ethical and effective leadership throughout the organization guides the accomplishment of the mission and supports institutional effectiveness and improvement. The paper details the steps involved in attaining each of the standards. For example, under the rubric of Standard 4, the paper outlines decision-making roles and processes. These roles and processes include the encouragement of staff, faculty, administrators, and students to take initiative in improving the practices, programs, and services in which they are involved, as well as the implementation of a written policy providing for the manner of this participation.
