AbstractThe theme of this volume is new perspectives on organizational justice (OJ). It considers justice beyond the organizational context by recognizing that what happens in organizations influences and is influenced by aspects of workers' lives that occur outside the workplace. "Economic and Noneconomic Mechanisms in Interpersonal Work Relationships" (Korsgaard, Sapienza) provides an integration of agency and procedural justice theories. "Religious Underpinnings of Social Justice Conceptions" (Stone, Stone-Romero) focuses on perspectives different religions may have on distributive justice. "Patients and Physicians as Stakeholders" (Kulik, Holbrook) proposes that one of the most important problems in the physician-patient relationship is the failure of patients to follow through on physicians' recommended treatments. "Social Information Processing (SIP) View of OJ" (Goldman, Thatcher) examines the potential contribution of SIP research to OJ theories. "Third-Party Observer's Reactions to Employee Mistreatment" (Ellard, Skarlicki) focuses on perceptions of fairness by third-party observers--those who may not be directly affected by employee mistreatment, but who make fairness judgments nonetheless. "Employee Stress, Injustice, and the Dual Position of the Boss" (Vermunt) uses Injustice-Stress Theory to explain why such a large percentage of Dutch employees enter into the country's disablement program. "Distribution of Tasks" (Mikula) argues that distribution of tasks, such as work tasks, may invoke a different set of distributive rules than those studied in distributive justice research. "'Hot Flashes, Open Wounds'" (Bies, Tripp) deals with emotions as a generally neglected consequence of organizational injustice. "Some Reflections on the Morality of OJ" (Cropanzano, Rupp), a commentary on the preceding chapters, couches the individual contributions in a much broader perspective that provides a complete examination of the morality of OJ. It attempts to show, with a number of illustrations from a variety of researchers, that to understand justice motives, it is necessary to integrate three perspectives: instrumental approach, interpersonal approach, and deontological perspective.
