| Abstract | This study examined Texas public school participation and performance in the Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs during the 2000-2001 school year. The number of Texas AP and IB examinees was higher than in previous years, as well as the number of schools with AP examinees. Participation rates for African Americans and Hispanics continued to climb, but still lagged behind those for Whites and Asian/Pacific Islanders. The female rate of participation in AP and IB examinations continued rising faster than the male participation rate. Performance as measured by the number of AP examinations in the 3-5 score range and number of IB examinations in the 4-7 score range was highest in 2001, consistent with the trend of steady increases since the mid-1990s. Asian/Pacific Islander and White students continued to outscore African Americans and Hispanics on AP and IB examinations. The report also compares AP results for Texas public and nonpublic school students with results for students in other states and the nation. Three appendixes contain test results in summary tables, by school district, and by district characteristics. (Contains 23 tables, 5 figures, and 69 references.) (SLD) |
