| Abstract | This article deals with denominal adjectives, also referred to by linguists as pseudo-adjectives or non-predicating adjectives. These adjectives are seldom used predicatively. This article explores the mechanism of this syntactical constraint. Examples of non-predicating adjectives that do not respect this syntactic constraint are analyzed. It is argued that the reasons for this constraint are at once semantic and pragmatic. Semantically, it is assumed that non-predicating adjectives mean a non-specified relation to the object they denote. This meaning is compatible with the function of predication. Pragmatically, it is shown that this incompatibility can be compensated by contextual information. (Author/VWL) |
