Abstract	This handbook, in English and French, provides guidelines for reporting and investigating child abuse and neglect by child care providers, law enforcement officials, social workers, health care providers, educators, and others as required by Alberta's Child Welfare Act. The handbook addresses: (1) how to recognize abuse and neglect; (2) how to respond to a disclosure of abuse or neglect from a child; (3) how to report abuse and neglect and intervene; (4) how investigations are undertaken and the role of service providers; (5) the rules governing the sharing of information among service providers; and (6) the importance of collaboration among all those working with children and families. Individual sections address the following topics: guiding principles; obligation to report; legal responsibilities; confidentiality; specific roles of children's services, health and wellness services, school personnel, law enforcement, and coordinated investigations; involving the police, child welfare worker and others; investigations involving aboriginal children; and promoting well-being and preventing abuse and neglect. Three appendices include: the Child Welfare Act definition of a "child in need of protective services," suggested guidelines for interviewing the child victim, and the relevant protocol from the Criminal Code of Canada.
