AbstractThis curriculum unit is the final volume of a four-part series. Noting that the humanities reveal the values and beliefs that underlie social, political, and economic institutions, the unit contends that the study of other countries and their histories may be greatly enriched by a humanities approach that draws on the fields of literature, history, and art. It finds that students with knowledge of a culture developed through the study of humanities not only will be better able to communicate with people from other cultures but also will better comprehend the institutions within which they live and work. The unit focuses on answering the following questions: What does it mean to be Japanese? How have the Japanese defined and expressed themselves, their culture, and their nation through significant periods in modern history? It uses these questions to apply a humanities approach to the study of Japanese history and provide the organizing theme for the unit and the series. The 11 lessons draw upon a variety of Japanese and western source materials, memoirs, literature, photography, painting, cartooning, and advertising to enhance student understanding of the richness and multiplicity of Japanese experience during the postwar period. Each lesson begins with a brief introduction followed by a statement of learning objectives, a list of necessary materials, an approximate guide to class time required, a procedures section, discussion of films recommended to supplement the lesson, and additional resources such as background readings, slide scripts, and answer keys for student activities. The lesson challenges students to synthesize learning from the unit by selecting and organizing information into a period time line. Includes student handouts and transparencies. (BT)
