Top stories include: Israeli soldiers attack Yasser Arafat's headquarters in Ramallah, Israel intensifies its West Bank offensive, Yasser Arafat's headquarters is badly damaged, Egypt limits its relationship with Israel, and President Bush sends Secretary of State Colin Powell to the Middle East (April 1-5); Iraqi oil, Secretary Powell visits Egyptian President Mubarak; violence makes Secretary Powell's mission difficult; and Secretary Powell arrives in Israel (April 8-12); U.S. tries to stop the Israeli-Palestinian crisis from becoming a regional conflict, Israeli Prime Minister Sharon claims that most of Israel's' West Bank operation will end within a week, profile of Marwan Barghouti, Secretary Powell concludes his negotiations in the Middle East, and French elections (April 15-19); President Bush's adviser Karen Hughes steps down, the U.S. East Coast experiences the worst drought in decades, and space tourism (April 22-26); Pakistan's President Musharraf calls a referendum aimed at keeping him in power (April 29-30).
