Abstract | Employee turnover contributes to lost production, disrupts normal business practices, and is expensive. This literature review examines turnover of three administrator positions: the school superintendent, the executive director of nonprofit agencies, and the chief executive officer of for-profit corporations. The most cited reason for turnover of school superintendents is a negative relationship between the board of education and the superintendent, caused by the board, the superintendent, or by environmental agents. Just as with the superintendent of schools, the most cited reason for executive-director turnover is the relationship with the board of directors. One major difference, however, is a greater likelihood of the executive director to secure another position, or to ready him or herself for another position beyond the one he or she just left. Retirement is the most cited reason for the chief executive officer to leave the for-profit corporation. Succession planning is more for the future and well-being of the corporation than it is for the outgoing chief executive officer. The transition should be done with as little disruption as possible to meet the corporation's needs of forging ahead with their profit goals. An appendix lists the studies used in this review.
