| Abstract | In response to a survey on attitudes and practices of teachers of first-year college composition, this study notes an anomaly related to resistance (apparent unwillingness or discomfort) on the part of respondents to limit themselves to the constraints of the objective survey items. This condition was considered to produce potential problems in the conclusions that could be drawn from the quantitative interpretation of these survey items. This study explores a way to improve the interpretation of these findings. Participants were 122 instructors in first-year composition at 14 colleges (community colleges and four-year colleges and universities). Using a mixed methodology approach increased the accuracy of the interpretation of the construct being measured by a survey instrument on composition instruction. This methodology can improve the usefulness of the survey. An appendix contains tables of study data. (Contains 4 tables and 24 references.) (SLD) |
