Abstract | Recognizing the relationship between child health and success in school and the importance of health insurance in remaining healthy, the Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools project of Consumers Union works to connect children in schools with California's state-sponsored health insurance program. This guide provides ideas on how a school and community can participate in enrolling children in Healthy Families and the Medi-Cal for Children programs. Chapters 1 and 2 of the guide present several methods for school-based outreach and enrollment, including working with Food Service Directors and the School Lunch Program to send information home to families, hiring a health coordinator for the district, and training youth to talk to their peers about the programs. Chapter 3 provides information on providing follow-up with families to ensure that they understand how their children's insurance works. Chapter 4 focuses on funding and how schools can access money to support their programs, including resources through the state as well as foundations. Chapter 5 offers suggestions to help schools and community groups in joining forces to ensure means of promoting Healthy Families and Medi-Cal for Children. Chapter 6 provides basic information on legislative and budget processes and ideas for advocacy. Twelve appendices include sample materials and a list of principles for strategic advocacy. (KB) |
