Lead stories include: the U.S. expands the War on Terrorism into the Republic of Georgia and the Philippines (March 1); American military action in Afghanistan intensifies and the U.S. enhances its humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, eight U.S. servicemen die in Operation Anaconda, Egypt's President Mubarak seeks to revive peace talks in the Middle East, Zimbabwe's president changes his country's election rules, and report on Operation Anaconda (March 4-8); Operation Anaconda continues 6 months after the attacks of September 11, President Bush commemorates 6 months since the attacks of September 11, Vice President Cheney begins his tour of the Middle East, the U.N. Security Council votes to endorse a Palestinian state, and Anthony Zinni's mission in the Mideast is "a tall order" (March 11-15); Israeli-Palestinian violence overshadows Vice President Cheney's Mideast tour, Israel agrees to withdraw troops from Palestinian occupied areas, the Bush Administration changes its stance on the Mideast conflict, a global effort to stamp out poverty gets underway in Mexico, and President Bush leaves for meetings with Latin American leaders (March 18-22); President Bush wraps up his meetings with Latin American leaders, Halle Berry and Denzel Washington make Oscar history, thousands are feared dead as a result of an earthquake in Afghanistan, the Arab League Summit gets off to a rocky start, and Arab leaders adopt the Saudi peace plan (March 25-29).
