Abstract | Grade 2 students learn about the people who supply food for the nation. Students study about different foods and the many individuals, from the farmer to the consumer, who are involved in bringing the products to market. The unit, which should take 8 weeks to implement, is designed to help students develop an appreciation and respect for these people and the work they do. The unit examines types of farms, how crops get to market, and the interdependence of food producers, processors, and distributors. It compares food production from long ago to production today. Students begin to understand this country's transition from a self-sufficient nation to a nation of consumers who are dependent on others to meet their needs. The lesson plan discusses the significance of the topic; lists focus questions; features literacy links; covers materials needed for the lesson; and provides information and student activities, dividing the topic into "Beginning the Topic"; "Developing the Topic"; and "Culminating the Topic." It suggests assessment activities and offers extended/correlated activities. (Contains a resource list for the sample topic. Appended are additional informative materials and sample worksheets.)
