Abstract | This kit for training paraeducators working with students who have disabilities includes a facilitator's manual, a paraeducator workbook, and six videotapes, one for each unit of instruction, and an instructor training videotape. The materials are to be used with small groups during training sessions totaling 14-20 hours. The facilitator's manual contains everything in the paraeducator's workbook plus suggestions for use of the videotapes, group discussion, and development of group exercises. Each videotape reviews material from the unit, presents examples of classroom applications of concepts or skills, and describes video-based exercises. The five units focus on: (1) goals and implications of educating students with disabilities; (2) working as a paraeducator; (3) strengthening communication skills; (4) strengthening behavior; and (5) strengthening skills with effective instruction. Individual lessons address topics such as principles for educating students with disabilities, understanding human development, integrating students with disabilities, background information on special education, the Individual Education Plan, the paraeducator's responsibilities, ethical standards, communicating effectively with the Child Study Team, communicating effectively with students, principles of behavior, reinforcing behavior, applying interventions to strengthen behavior, and principles of effective instruction. Eight appendices include blank progress checks, student observation forms, and a checklist of potential reinforcers. (Contains 20 references.) (DB) |
