AbstractThis dictionary of terms from children's literature provides definitions of 325 concepts and principles that will help librarians and teachers give meaning to literary works being introduced in the classroom. The book's alphabetical organization of terms facilitates access to information when the reader is considering a specific term. All of the individual terms in the dictionary are arranged in a cross-referenced index of the entries arranged by subject--from activities to words and wordplay. Each term is illustrated by examples from contemporary and classic books and tales, and every definition also includes ideas for programming activities that will bring these concepts--the veritable building blocks of stories--alive to young readers. These might range, according to the dictionary, from teaching children how "parallel stories" function, to examples of "archetypes" with popular characters, to defining an acrostic or a haiku and helping children to actually compose one. With this dictionary librarians, teachers, reviewers, parents, and storytellers have a practical reference guide with explanations, examples, and activities for engaging young people in the completely informed reading experience.
