Abstract | This volume is designed for use by facilitators in school settings and youth agencies in which "Second Step: A Violence Prevention Curriculum" is being implemented. The "Family Guide" kit contains background information on the program, techniques for leading a successful family group, and participant handouts in this volume, four videotapes, and 25 anger management and problem solving magnets. "Second Step" is a series of curriculum kits designed to reduce impulsive and aggressive behavior in children and increase their level of social skills and competence. It teaches skills in the areas of empathy, impulse control, and anger management. Second Step is designed for all families, not just for families of high-risk children, since parent training programs have proven to be an effective strategy for reducing violence at home and improving children's behavior. Parent take-home letters are an integral part of Second Step, and these letters are reproduced in this facilitator's guide. The guide suggests six facilitator-led weekly family sessions to give families understanding of Second Step, but directions are included for a single session. A take-home videotape for situations when group meetings are not possible can be borrowed by students and their parents. Suggestions on getting started and facilitator materials for each of the six sessions are presented. (Includes 32 parent handouts.) (SLD) |
