AbstractThis report focuses on the compulsory education reforms introduced throughout the European Union from 1984-1994. Compulsory education that stage of education established formally by a government for the education of all children and young people, usually institutionalized on a full- or part-time basis, and compulsory for a certain number of years. The study was conducted using a two-part questionnaire, sent to all member states, with respondents addressing the most significant reforms in compulsory education in each nation during the specified years, their purpose or justification, assessment of their scope and significance, and procedures for implementation. Respondents were then asked to describe the situation before and after the reforms. A descriptive data sheet for each European Community Member State was compiled. The first part of the document presents a comparative, historical analysis of the reforms introduced by the Member States of the European Union and the European Free Trade Association/European Economic Area (EFTA/EEA) countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) in compulsory education and identifies the main trends. The second part of the report comprises individual descriptions of the national situations, country by country, and has been prepared and checked by the National Units in the Eurydice network. (Each country's report includes references.) (EH)
