Abstract | This packet is designed to be used by teachers in middle schools and high schools as they teach drug education. It accompanies a public television series, "Moyers on Addiction: Close at Home," but can be used on its own. The materials are in three parts. The first part is a folder that explains how to use the materials, provides a list of organizations that teachers of drug education may find helpful, and a bibliography containing 26 useful sources. Part 2 is a teachers booklet that includes 2 sections. "Creating Classroom Connections" discusses how to infuse substance abuse prevention lessons into various subjects. "Prevention That Works: An Overview" looks at successful strategies for substance abuse prevention. It gives guidelines for designing and implementing school programs. The final part of this packet is made up of 10 student activity cards that are to be photocopied and distributed in class. The activities include information on the science of addiction; recovery; the drug trade; getting help with substance abuse problems; living a drug-free life; how to tell if a friend might have a substance abuse problem; a self assessment questionnaire; what to do when offered drugs; and examples of people involved in drug abuse programs.
