AbstractUNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children's rights, to help meet their basic needs, and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. This report details the accomplishments and activities of UNICEF for the year 1999. The report begins with the mission statement and introductory remarks from the U.N. Secretary-General. The overview statement from the executive director pledges that UNICEF will broaden partnerships with other organizations and with governments to more effectively meet on behalf of children the challenges of poverty, HIV/AIDS, armed conflict, and discrimination. The accomplishments of UNICEF in 1999 are detailed, including initiatives to help break the cycle of poverty through improving basic social services and educational access, preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV and educating to prevent AIDS, responding to the needs of women and children affected by armed conflicts in various locations, improving equal access to education for boys and girls, reducing maternal mortality, and ending violence against girls and women. The report describes several partnerships with individuals, foundations, and corporations and delineates international celebrity spokespersons. A map details the locations where UNICEF is involved. Information is included on UNICEF's income (by source of funding) for each nation and agency. The report also delineates expenditures by sector, noting that 33 percent of expenditures were for child and maternal care and 16 percent for education and early childhood care and development. The funds from regular resources targeted for particular programs are listed by country. The report concludes with contact information for various UNICEF committees. (KB)
