Abstract	Many U.S. citizens including educators, community leaders, youth workers, other human service persons, and young people tend to be apolitical, timid, cynical, or disdainful about the political process. But knowledge of the political process, when properly applied, is portable wealth and eminently usable power. Every vote can count when backed by solid facts, deep commitment, and persistent application of simple political skills. This guide is based on the conviction that people need to adjust many of their counterproductive attitudes about the political process and then to hone a few easily acquired political skills. These attitudes and skills will empower people to engage successfully with those who control the purse-strings and administrative powers that play such decisive roles in the rise and fall of many public and nonprofit organizations. It stresses the importance of building human relationships, rather than mere knowledge of the political process or following a set of "how-to" steps.
