AbstractNoting that the education and training of most early childhood practitioners lack information on child care as an adult work environment, this guide is designed to assist trainers in providing practitioners information about working with the array of adults they encounter on the job, the serious challenges and instabilities in the field, and the importance of advocacy in the field. The guide is designed to be used in conjunction with the book "Working for Quality Child Care" in order to help trainers support and guide both students during their early childhood training and practitioners on the job site. The guide's introduction provides suggestions for trainers, information on setting ground rules or agreements, and on the importance of providing opportunities for participants to share stores and pose questions for discussion. The chapters are: (1) "Working in Child Care Today"; (2) "Working Relationships in Child Care Programs"; (3) "Your Child Care Work Environment"; and (4) "Leadership and Professional Growth: In Your Workplace and Beyond." Each chapter lists goals for students, additional activities, and references and further readings. The guide's six appendices include suggestions for using these activities in college courses, a sample of materials used in community-based training and advocacy efforts, a worksheet for calculating a fair wage for family child care providers, and one for preparing a full cost of care invoice for center-based care.
