Top stories include: special series on the teenage brain, and MTV celebrates its 20th anniversary (August 2-3); violence rocks the Middle East, a team of scientists plans to begin cloning human beings, scientists disagree on the issue of human cloning, summertime heat and humidity can take a dangerous toll on the body, and President Bush allows limited funding for stem cell research (August 6-10); 20 years ago IBM unveiled its signature PC, efforts are underway to eradicate polio by 2005, Fidel Castro turns 75, and special report on Amra Trebinjac in Sarajevo (August 13-15, August 17); Russians remember the 1991 coup attempt that fatally wounded communism, patents may threaten access to stem cell lines, the Federal Reserve Board cuts interest rates again, liberals look for a new political target as Senator Jesse Helms announces his retirement, and France and Germany face rising unemployment (August 20-24); East Timor prepares for its first democratic elections, the National Institutions of Health (NIH) releases a list of labs that own the existing lines of embryonic stem cells, how much homework is enough for children, more U.S. schools are instituting dress codes, and college students discuss the challenges of money management (August 27-31).
