| Abstract | These classroom guides, designed to accompany the daily CNN (Cable News Network) Newsroom broadcasts for the month of September 2001 provide program rundowns, suggestions for class activities and discussion, student handouts, and a list of related news terms. Top stories include: shark attacks ignite controversy in some Florida communities, Mexican president Fox and U.S. President Bush prepare to meet in Washington, U.S. Senate reviews President Bush's plan for stem cell research funding, CNN viewers get an exclusive tour of the International Space Station (September 4-7); Australia hardens its stance against illegal immigration, and researchers are one step closer to developing an HIV vaccine. CNN Newsroom broadcasts for the dates of September 12, 13, 14, 17 and 18 are preempted to allow for live CNN coverage of the events of September 11, 2001 and their effects on students' lives. Questions and activities that may help teachers address these events with students are provided. Special Edition of "America's New War" reports for September 20-21 and 24-28 include Pakistan's stand and chaos on the border of Afghanistan; U.S. troops prepare for action and the U.S. looks to Saudi Arabia for support; the strengthened spirit of Americans and a prayer service held at Yankee Stadium; diplomatic support from Russia and some of Afghanistan's neighboring countries; relinquishing of Americans' civil liberties to prevent terrorism; and the September 11 attacks financially cripple the airline industry, rental car industry experiences fallout from the attacks, and biological and chemical terrorism.
