Abstract	Book Club started over 12 years ago with the goal of creating an alternative context for reading instruction--one that would get students excited about reading and discussing books. Since then, Book Club's combination of excellent literature, relevant writing activities, and student-led discussion groups has proven effective in classrooms. This guide was developed to help both beginning and experienced teachers implement Book Club in their middle-level classrooms. Chapters 1-5 of the guide explain the program and offer teaching strategies, while Chapters 6-8 provide detailed lesson plans for several theme-based units. In addition to the guide, the Book Club Web site can be used by teachers to involve the class in book discussions with students at other schools, interact with other Book Club teachers, obtain additional novel guides, and access a variety of professional development sources.
