Abstract	Effective prevention programs are based on the idea that an early response to a problem leads to better outcomes for students and teachers. This work of strategy and practical tactics is designed to give teachers ways to counter behavioral problems with practices that that have proven effective in all school settings. Teachers, researchers, and professors of education contributed practical and specific strategies on building successful prevention programs in schools. Chapter 1 presents a brief overview of school based programs to prevent emotional or behavioral problems from interfering with education. Chapter 2 focuses on proactive approaches to improving behavior for individual students with antisocial tendencies. Chapter 3 uses examples from classrooms to describe how Total Quality Education is an effective model for creating a positive learning environment. Chapter 4 discusses preventing problems through social skills instruction. Chapter 5 discusses unified discipline policy. Chapter 6 describes Parent Teacher Action Research as a process that helps parents and teachers learn to work together as equal partners while they address a child's need for consistency between home and school. Chapter 7 explains building linkages to learning by community partnerships. Chapter 8 discusses the use of conflict resolution and peer mediation to support positive behavior. Chapter 9 presents a model to help build connections with disenfranchised youth and families. Chapter 10 discusses measuring the success of prevention programs.
