| Abstract | The teacher's guide and student text are designed to help students understand why nations compete, why they cooperate, and why they sometimes go to war. The guide will help teachers develop comprehensive lesson plans that help students: (1) understand the behavior of nations by defining national interest and examining the factors that affect the development of foreign policy; (2) explore how U.S. foreign policy is shaped by many influences; (3) examine the changes in the world from the Cold War era to the present; (4) apply the concept of interdependence to today's international relations; (5) evaluate the effectiveness of individual tools of foreign policy in meeting a nation's overall goals; and (6) analyze current global situations and speculate on future events. The guide and student text are divided into four units: "The Behavior of Nations"; "How U.S. Foreign Policy Is Made"; "The Cold War and Beyond"; and "World Issues Today." The guide provides objectives, key terms, questions for discussion, motivation, activities, unit test materials, and handouts for each unit. Appendices to the student text contain a further reading list, Web resources, and a glossary. (BT) |
