AbstractThis guide provides a "road map" to the various ways that schools and employers assess high-performance competencies, such as problem solving, information management, and communication and negotiation skills. The guide begins with a brief analysis of why it is important to assess these skills in light of the current standards environment in education and key trends in the economy. The guide includes an overview of tools and materials for assessing high-performance competencies and profiles of selected tools and materials. The methodologies range from "off-the-shelf" short answer tools to relatively expensive hands-on assessments. The profiles range from simples descriptions of existing materials to extended narratives of program or system development. Several of the strategies, especially those in the section on competency assessment in schools, outline processes that schools and school systems have developed in collaboration with partners. The tools are grouped into the following sections: (1) on-demand tests, both multiple choice and short answer; (2) self-assessments; (3) competency assessment in schools; (4) competency assessment in the workplace; and (5) competency assessment in adult education settings. This guide can be a starting point for those who want to equip young people with a broad range of cross-cutting high-performance skills to help them succeed in postsecondary education and the changing economy.
