Abstract	This unit intends for students to explore various literary devices such as theme, characterization, and vocabulary while they read Jack London's "The Call of the Wild." While reading this text, students will explore the relationship of these devices in connection to the unit's overall theme: survival. Students will be exposed to history, new words, ideas, and technology--knowledge that has real life value and can be used beyond the classroom. The unit aims for students to use teamwork to accomplish specific goals, enhancing and emphasizing the need to work together as demonstrated in the novel. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the text while learning and retaining new life skills. The unit was designed for an eighth-grade heterogeneous language arts class with a 60-minute time span in a 35-day period. It can be integrated with other subjects such as science, history, geography, and math. The unit integrates such learning theories as Bloom's taxonomy and multiple intelligences, and the kinesthetic learning theory has been extensively employed as well. Throughout the unit students are further aided in the learning process via a mixture of individual, partner, and group activities. (NKA)
