AbstractThese classroom guides, designed to accompany the daily CNN (Cable News Network) Newsroom broadcasts for the month of September 2000, provide program rundowns, suggestions for class activities and discussion, student handouts, and a list of related news terms. Top stories include: FBI arrests a suspect in the Emulex hoax case (September 1); U.S. presidential candidates prepare for the presidential debates, the U.N. Millennium Summit begins, deaths in West Timor cast a shadow over the U.N. Millennium Summit, and the U.N. seeks ways to improve its peacekeeping missions (September 5-8); OPEC will increase its oil production in an effort to ease high prices, the FTC accuses Hollywood of marketing violence to children, Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. and Ford Motor Company blame each other during congressional hearings, the U.S. is experiencing the largest sustained wave of immigration in its history, and as British protesters bring their nationwide blockade to a halt, they accelerate throughout the rest of Europe (September 11-15); financing higher education is an important issue for U.S. presidential candidates, U.S. consumers are concerned about soaring oil prices and the British government is working to avert further disruption of oil supplies, viruses and bacteria can be easily transmitted, White House officials worry about the stability of oil prices, and Republicans blame the Clinton-Gore Administration for the lack of a national energy policy (September 18-22); do presidential debates matter to voters; the AFL-CIO flexes its political muscle, European reaction to Yugoslavia's elections has been swift, U.S. Hopes that Slobodan Milosevic will concede defeat; new doping regulations take their toll on Olympic athletes, anabolic steroids can have damaging side effects; Hollywood proposes a plan to end marketing of violent films to children, theaters find it difficult to enforce movie ratings; and the U.S. presidential candidates; and college students offer pre-debate advice to the candidates.
