AbstractIn 1998, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching launched an initiative known as the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL). This bibliography was complied early in the project to establish a baseline against which progress in the higher education arena might be gauged at the end of its current 5-year funding cycle. The bibliography has three sections. The first, a definitional one, includes significant statements about the idea of the scholarship of teaching and learning, drawn from various traditions that contribute to its evolving conception. The second section provides examples of the scholarship of teaching and learning. Selections in this section attempt to sample work from a variety of fields, in a variety of forms and media, employing a variety of methods. The third section points readers to resources that can assist them in the doing of the scholarship of teaching and learning. The bibliography serves to define a scholarship that focuses explicitly on student learning. It reflects a conviction that the scholarship of teaching and learning can and should take on different forms. Thus, the inclusion of examples ranging from a book-length study to a pedagogical colloquium by a prospective faculty member; from an on-line resource, to a protocol for ongoing collaborative inquiry, to a textbook. A short summary is provided for each listing in the bibliography. (EMS)
