AbstractChanges in assessment policy have resulted in a proliferation of testing in Canadian schools. Advocates claim that more testing will result in greater accountability, but this book states that there is little evidence to support standardized testing from a pedagogical perspective. It examines the effects of standardized testing on educational equity, emphasizing the impact of testing bias and the misuse of test results. It also discusses performance-based assessment and the politics of testing. Some general observations on the assessment of student learning are presented, and some principles to guide decision making in the areas of assessment, evaluation, and curriculum are suggested. The chapters are: (1) "Introduction"; (2) "Problems with Standardized Testing--An Overview"; (3)"Testing and Inequity in Education"; (4) "A Few Words about Authentic Assessment"; (5) "Politics of Testing"; and (6) "Some General Observations." Appendixes contain a summary of problems with standardized testing, some principles for fair student assessment, and the principles of the Canadian Teachers Federation on curriculum, assessment, and evaluation.
