Abstract	This report presents information and statistics about the overall picture of education in Europe, and makes it possible to measure the strengths and weaknesses within the European Union. Teachers are given a special place in this summary as it devotes a complete dossier to an analysis of the characteristics of the teaching profession, in terms of training, conditions of service, and remuneration. The report is in two parts. Basic data about the different levels of education are presented in the first part, including: (1) "Context"; (2) "Structures and Schools"; (3) "Pre-school Education"; (4) "Primary Education"; (5) "Secondary Education"; (6) "Higher Education"; and (7) "Financing of Education." The second thematic part is devoted to an analysis of the teaching profession. The 15 Member States of the European Union are included, along with the new Member States of Austria, Finland, and Sweden. (EH)
