AbstractThe quality of communication linkages between farmers and the agricultural agencies responsible for diffusion of innovations in the South West Province of Cameroon was examined in a study of all 25 researchers and 150 extension agents in the province and 385 farmers who were randomly selected from the province's 3,000 farmers. Data were collected through questionnaires completed by 90% of the researchers, 85% of the extensionists, and 75% of the farmers. The following were among the major findings: (1) more than half of farmers adopted food crops and related cultural practices transferred to them for that year; (2) the four most important factors responsible for farmers deciding to adopt the selected food crops were mutual trust between farmers and their information source, credibility of the information source, frequency of communication, and farm demonstration; (3) all three groups reported moderate levels of interaction with each other; (4) hierarchy characteristics and organizational goals were two of the most important factors affecting communication among the three groups; (5) all three groups reported using the hierarchical model of communication; and (6) working on immediate problems and active participation in committees were identified as two principles motivating adult learners to participate in learning activities.
