AbstractThe 14 chapters in this volume examine different types of apprenticeships from a variety of perspectives. "Introduction" (Patrick Ainley, Helen Rainbird) provides an overview of the content. Three chapters in Part 1 examine the history of apprenticeship: "The Apprentice in History" (Richard Aldrich); "The Changing Structure and Significance of Apprenticeship with Special Reference to Construction" (Linda Clarke); and "The Embedding of Apprenticeship in Industrial Relations: British Engineering, 1925-65" (Paul Ryan). Three chapters in part 2 open up the idea of apprenticeship to various disciplinary perspectives: "Nietzsche, Marx, and Mastery: The Learning unto Death" (Glenn Rikowski); "The Nomad's Apprentice: Different Kinds of 'Apprenticeship' Among Kyrgyz Nomads in Central Asia" (Stephanie Bunn); and "Conversation and Instruction Within Apprenticeship: Affordances for Learning" (Michael A. Forrester). The three chapters in part 3 on apprenticeship as a model of learning are as follows: "Making Meaning: Language for Learning" (Edwin Webb); "Beyond the Institution of Apprenticeship: Towards a Social Theory of Learning as the Production of Knowledge" (David Guile, Michael Young); and "Apprenticeship a la Mode? Some Reflections on Learning as Cultural Labour" (Phil Cohen). Four chapters in part 4 include contemporary policy debates on work-based learning and the analysis of Modern Apprenticeships (MAs): "A Sense of Belonging: The Relationship Between Community and Apprenticeship" (Alison Fuller, Lorna Unwin); "Modern Apprenticeships: Just in Time, or Far Too Late?" (Malcolm Maguire); "Modern Apprentices in College. So What's New?" (Prue Huddleston); and "Working to Learn: An Holistic Approach to Young People's Education and Training" (Peter Senker, Helen Rainbird, Karen Evans, Phil Hodkinson, Ewart Keep, Malcolm Maguire, David Raffe, Lorna Unwin).
