| Abstract | This essay examines poverty in Latin America and its effect on education. It focuses on sexual bias and emphasizes that poverty is inherent in the social and economic structure of the region. The text examines how states in Latin America view the role of education, and it describes the growing chasm between the poor and the gentrified in various countries. It explores the key features of poverty and examines the relationship between poverty and schooling, poor families and schooling, teachers and poor children, and poverty and women, especially the myriad ways that poverty and stereotypes restrict opportunities open to women. The essay discusses the role of governmental policies in poverty and how gender in public policy is becoming an increasingly accepted configuration. The difficulties in enacting educational policies due to entrenched sex stereotypes and the resultant political action fomented by civil society are both described. The essay concludes that poverty is endemic in Latin America and affects a large segment of the population. Furthermore, gender bias in schooling slows any progress that women can make in realizing their full potential. (Contains 30 references.) (RJM) |
