AbstractCitizens must share a common memory of where their society has been. They also need to enrich their knowledge of the past by absorbing additional information, new to many, about those aspects of U.S. history that have been shaped by Native Americans and by those who came from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This collection of articles taken from the Organization of American Historians' Magazine of History," attempts to continue historians' and teachers' education by broadening their horizons and enlarging their body of knowledge. The essays, lesson plans, and bibliographic overviews in the collection are a resource for classroom teachers that can help strengthen the teaching of history. The collection contains 95 essays and lesson plans prepared by master teachers and are divided into the following sections: (1) "African American History"; (2) "Native American History"; (3) "Latinos in the United States"; (4) "Asian American History"; (5) "From the Editors"; (6) "Thematic/Survey"; (7) "Colonial and Revolutionary Period"; (8) "Early National Period"; (9) "Civil War and Reconstruction"; (10) "Gilded Age and Progressive Era"; (11) "Early Twentieth Century"; and (12) "Post-World War II." (Contains an index and references at the end of each essay.) (BT)
