| Abstract | This booklet is the first in a series of monographs developed as a resource for middle-level leaders. It provides practical strategies, procedures, and ideas to enable school leaders to plan and implement programs that will provide opportunities for students to be prepared for high school and beyond. The text focuses on the application of team skills in creating a community for learning, teaching a core of common knowledge, ensuring success for all students, empowering teachers and administrators, and reengaging families in the education of young adolescents. It outlines strategies behind team development and implementation, which includes forming, storming, norming, and performing. It discusses the development of collaborative skills and presents a strategy for enhancing these skills, including promulgating a mission statement, devising an action plan, delineating team roles, deepening communication among team members, enhancing desirable team behaviors, fostering decision making, establishing ground rules to define team norms and acceptable/unacceptable behaviors, and using the scientific method to analyze the results. The booklet concludes with the observation that by being part of a team, teachers can overcome their isolation as they realize that they have compatriots who also want to pursue change.
