| Abstract | A study employed Q methodology, personal interviews, and a self-administered questionnaire to explore how female college students, a population segment with one of the highest incidences of anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders, rank magazine advertisements that feature a variety of potentially harmful female stereotypes. Specifically, the study examined how ads that feature stereotypes promoting the "thin ideal" rank in comparison to other harmful stereotypes. Findings suggest that women are accustomed to seeing ultra-thin fashion models, and they do not readily perceive the danger in this stereotypical portrayal of beauty and success.
