AbstractThis report provides important criteria for the effective teaching of community college English. The following suggestions are presented to instructors in order to facilitate optimal student learning in college English courses: (1) present content in a meaningful manner, with emphasis on clarifying relevant facts, concepts, and generalizations; (2) develop and maintain student interest by selecting activities that engage the learner; (3) enable students to perceive the purpose in learning, and develop the awareness that motivation can be intrinsic as well as extrinsic (in environmental sources, such as grading, peer recognition, and teacher approval); (4) make adequate provisions for individual differences in the classroom, as students vary in purposes, interest, and personal goals. Another factor to consider in determining motivation is student involvement in extracurricular activities. A variety of methods should be used in the teaching of English, including a combination of lecturing, student input, discussion questions, established learning stations, reference materials, problem-solving, video-tapes with quality objectives, and testing in order to measure goal attainment. Meaning, understanding, and interest are all powerful factors in learning, and will determine the level of student achievement in the classroom. Contains 10 references. (AS)
