AbstractA case study introduced Cathy Starr, a seventh grade language arts teacher in a school known for its excellence in English/language arts instruction, and described a two year in-depth research and observation study on how Starr teaches language arts and what influences her professional life has on her approach and instruction. Hudson Middle School, where Starr teaches, and the Schoonhavn district along with the support of a strong suburban community, benefits from the visionary leadership of Hope Anderson and Kim Lehrer, who were the driving forces in the area of staff development and curriculum planning in the district and in the middle school. The professional life at Hudson is enriched with an "expectation of participation and input" from the teachers from developing the curriculum to district-sponsored activities to department meetings to classroom learning. Starr teacher language arts with a great deal of interaction with her colleagues. Her main goal as an educator is to learn more about engaging students in thinking about literature. The system allows an experimental environment that encourages students and teachers to take risks. She teaches language arts energetically with a focus on student interaction, lots of reading, writing, and discussion, and lots of student questions. (Contains a Seventh Grade Language Arts Final Examination, four references, a list of five related reports and case studies from the Excellence in English Research Project, and a survey instrument.)
