Abstract | This curriculum guide provides the framework for K-12 arts education program in Alabama's public schools. Content standards in the guide are minimum and required, and fundamental and specific but not exhaustive. School systems may include additional content standards and add implementation guidelines, resources, and/or activities. In response to the idea that the arts have intrinsic value and are worth experiencing for their own sake, the guide suggests that each art discipline appeals to different senses and expresses itself through the different media, and that each adds a special richness to the learning environment. Studies have shown that arts education in schools provides greater motivation to learn in all subjects, increases attendance rates for students and teachers, raises test scores including standardized achievement tests, engages students more fully in the learning process, gives teachers a sense of renewal and challenge, and develops higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills. Sections in the guide include dance, music, theater, and visual arts. Each section contains an introduction, a conceptual framework, content standards, resources, a bibliography, and a glossary of terms. Eight appendices contain information about audience behavior, performance behavior, arts-related careers and professional organizations, humanities course guidelines, laws and regulations relating to arts education, Alabama high school graduation requirements, and guidelines for local time requirements and homework.
