AbstractThis report outlines the history of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) from its inception in 1963 to 1997. The Senate has its roots in Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 48, which specified that the State Board of Education provide for the establishment of academic senates "...for the purposes of representing [faculty] in the formation of policy on academic and professional matters...". This resolution gave senates legal recognition and a specific jurisdiction over academic and professional matters. In 1968, the first statewide meeting of local academic senate presidents was held, with an attendance of 40, to explore ways to create a state senate that would represent local senates at the Chancellor's Office and before the Board of Governors. Following this meeting, a constitution for ASCCC was written and approved, and the first meeting of ASCCC was held in April, 1969. During sessions held from 1970-72, the Senate adopted the first of many resolutions supporting minorities and women in community college education. The article continues to outline the Senate's development with regard to collective bargaining, leadership, sub-committees, Senate publications, funding, governance, adopted guidelines, curriculum issues, and various milestones in ASCCC growth. Included is a list of ASCCC presidents, locations of Senate sessions, and presiding officers. (AS)
