Abstract | Item-level statistics from ability and achievement tests have been underutilized as sources of data for building models of cognitive development. How item data can be used to build a cognitive-developmental map of proportional reasoning is demonstrated. The product of the analysis is a cognitive hierarchy with levels corresponding to categories of cognitive demand established in prior theory. Levels of the constructed hierarchy also correspond to predictions of the working memory demands of the items, and to the measured memory span of examinees. The techniques used in this study could be used more generally to model cognitive-developmental trajectories within other topics and domains. These techniques could be applied to numerous extant assessment databases to identify important conceptual systems in mathematics, science, and other fields, and to construct cognitive-developmental hierarchies within those systems.
