Abstract | Responding to complaints by New York City area employers about the lack of communication skills of City University of New York (CUNY) graduates, Baruch College (a CUNY college with a specialization in business) initiated a new program of communication-intensive courses to address the problem. One such course involved intercultural communication. The course focuses on experiential learning through student-facilitated discussions, work with an interactive computer writing tool, and an extensive ethnographic project (including an observation, library and Internet research, interviewing, an e-mail survey, and a formal presentation). All elements of the course are designed to achieve three goals: conscious analysis of communication techniques and their improvements; intensive communication practice; and content acquisition. Students reported having communicated more during this communication intensive course than during the rest of their academic careers. They especially appreciated the chance to facilitate their own small group discussions and to conduct a comprehensive ethnographic project. The course materials are included in the paper. (RS) |
