Abstract | This document contains 12 units of study for a competency-based workplace literacy program, developed by Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Kentucky, for a local plastics and engineering company. Each unit covers between two and nine competencies. Of the 12 units, 5 are devoted to language skills and 7 are devoted to mathematics. Each unit contains a lesson plan for each of the competencies taught in the unit. The lesson plans contain the following: lesson objectives, prerequisite skill(s); literacy skills addressed; detailed instructions for presenting the unit; evaluation activity; and extension activities. Also included in each unit are some or all of the following: student handouts; transparency masters; learning activities; and self-evaluation checklists. Many learning activities require learners to read and or complete reading texts, forms, and charts actually used at the company. The language skills unit topics are as follows: communicating; learning and using plastics vocabulary; interpreting work-related forms and charts; reading of workplace materials critically; and writing forms and letters. Mathematics topics include the following: understanding whole numbers; using fractions; using decimals; calculating percentages; measuring items with the common English and metric systems; understanding statistics; and understanding geometric concepts.
