AbstractIn 1996, the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future published a report, "What Matters Most: Teaching for America's Future." The state of Missouri entered into a partnership with the National Commission to study and debate issues raised in the report. In 1997, the Missouri Commission on the Future of Teaching convened for the first of six meetings. The meetings involved gatherings of nearly 100 leaders in education in Missouri, which culminated in this report. The broad goal of the endeavor was to frame an ongoing conversation about ways to enhance the teaching profession. Subcommittees focused on recruitment, preparation, certification, induction, professional development, rewarding teachers' knowledge and skill, and redesigning schools. The Missouri Commission looked at issues pertinent to Missouri from the National Commission report and arrived at five general recommendations for action: get serious about standards; reinvent teacher preparation and professional development; fix teacher recruitment and put qualified teachers in every classroom; encourage and reward teacher knowledge and skill; and create schools that are organized for student and teacher success. Recommendations are the views of the majority. Minority recommendations are appended. (SM)
