AbstractThis book is based on ethnographic research carried out between 1965 and 1994 during eight visits to a tribal region in southwest Iran. The book weaves together local practices, cognitive categories, folklore, and anecdotes concerning all aspects of growing up to illuminate the world of children in the village of Deh Koh. The book describes how children in Deh Koh use games, pastimes, and the gendered patterns of interaction to surmount authority and personal demands in a village life that seems to limit young people's experiences. Examples of chapters are: (1) "Three Children and a Man with a Flute"; (2) "Big Belly" (pregnancy); (3) "Dreaming a Horseman"; (4) "Named Lion, Named Rose"; (5) "Lullabies and Jouncing Songs"; (6) "Talking to, Talking about"; (7) "The Logic of Children's Miseries"; and (8) "Beauty, School, and Men's Desires."
