AbstractThis book identifies features of best practice in women's education and training (WET) in Britain, as revealed in a nationwide search that led to the first National Institute of Adult Continuing Education Award for Good Practice in WET. Chapter 1 describes the process for selecting six awardees. Chapter 2 isolates key issues and themes that gave insight into the way WET is developing and relates them to the current context in which WET is provided. Chapters 3-5 classify WET provision into three broad categories. Extracts from most of the 71 submissions are included. Chapter 3, "Return to Work," includes a range of courses that lead many women toward or into paid employment or self-employment. Chapter 4 focuses on "Return to Learn" and emphasizes giving women opportunities to take up learning at the level and in the context that is appropriate. Chapter 5, "Return to Re-assess," is a collection of examples that allow women to choose from various types of provision or to spend time discovering which might be most appropriate for them. Subsections look at two other types of provision---one focusing on reentry through childcare and parenting and another containing new or innovative programs that do not fit any other description. Chapter 6 poses questions and draws conclusions. Appendixes include lists of submissions for the award and acronyms. (YLB)
