Abstract | This essay shows how the construction of literature curricula and the study of literature can contribute to civic education. The paper describes the anti-civic forces now at work in literature programs in U.S. schools and explains why these forces exist. The report suggests how literature programs can strengthen the underpinnings of a constitutional democracy centered on individual rights and a concept of personal responsibility. The programs can combat the anti-civic forces while at the same time honoring the essence of literary study, which is the teaching of literature as literature. The paper uses chiefly U.S. and British literary works to illustrate the suggestions but advocates educators in other countries use literature of their countries to support civic education and clarify civic education goals.
