AbstractA research study used trend analysis to examine case studies of 18 workplace literacy programs with a framework of good practice principles as a template to identify trends in practice. Each case study was examined using the nine components identified in the framework: program orientation, program evaluation, partnerships and participation, equity, principles of adult education, program content and feedback, professional development, assessment, and ongoing learning. Two ways of talking about the results of the trend analysis were used. The first was through a summary table that listed the nine framework components and a key point related to the successful application of that particular principle. It served as an overview of what was found in the trend analysis. The second way of talking about the results was through a text with a story-line. In prose format, each of the framework components was discussed in terms of the major ideas that came out of the trend analysis. A number of common elements from program practice clearly surfaced when enlarged through the lens of the framework: partnerships and participation, program orientation of worker centeredness, and ongoing assessment. The framework needed some fine tuning. Two components were less clearly defined--equity and professional development. (A set of guiding questions directly related to the framework is appended for use as a reflective exercise.) (YLB)
