Abstract | This simulation allows students to learn of the shared Hispanic background of the Southwestern states and help students realize that the states developed in a parallel fashion, not in isolation. The packet is divided into eight sections: (1) "Introduction"; (2) "Land"; (3) "Native Americans"; (4) "Explorers"; (5) "Missions/Settlements"; (6) "Ranchos/Statehood"; (7) "Fiesta"; and (8) "Optional Activities." Each phase begins with a pretest to determine what students know. Next, a class discussion covers the background essay, glossary, timeline, and the cooperative learning team responsibilities. Enrichment projects and activities are suggested. Each phase can be used as time allows and in various grade and class settings. Evaluation is based on the results of the pre/post test, quality of the team presentation, student participation in group activities and discussions, and the quality and number of additional projects and/or reports completed. Team-building and collaborative activities are essential to this unit. (EH) |
